It's Pouring Rain E-mail

Just when you think it's rained enough on the Jackets I read this via Puck-daddy from former #6 overall pick Nikita Filatov

F Nikita Filatov(notes) (RUS) had his captaincy stripped prior to the 5th-place game between Russia and Finland. A berating by Coach Vladamir Plyushchev during an intermission in the quarter-final vs. Switzerland preceded the action. F Kirill Petrov served as captain as Russia lost 4-3 to finish 6th...

..and it doesn't stop there -- from ThePipelineShow.com:

Nikita Filatov, who should have been one of the top 3 scorers in the tournament, finished outside of the top 29 scorers with 6 points in 6 games and it sounded like he might be finished with the Columbus Blue Jackets.

"Something should change, I'm not going to say what, but there are a couple of reasons if they are still the same, I'm not going back," said the Russian star.

If Hitchcock is indeed the reason why Filatov isn't happy, the Blue Jackets head coach might not be the only bench boss he's having problems with. When asked if Filatov and the Russians quit on Vladamir Plyuschkev, he had this response.

"If it looked like this, you're probably right."

What the Jackets really needed was for Filatov's to shine in this tournament so that his trade stock would rise.

What they got seems to be more of what some folks have been saying since this happened - that Nikita Filatov is a spoiled and self centered player who only cares about one thing -- and that is Nikita Filatov.

I put a lot of blame on everyone when this kid bolted but the more this kid opens his yap the more I question my thought process. He seems to point the finger in every direction but his own which tells me all I need to know.

I was also one that liked his candidness but all he's doing now is digging himself a bigger hole.  Someone needs to buy this kid some duct tape and double wrap it.  He needs to let his play on the ice do all his talking.

The biggest problem now is the Jackets are probably stuck with this kid as he won't be worth squat on the trade market.

One thing I do know is the Jackets better be done drafting Russians high in the draft.

As far as I'm concerned Nikolai Zherdev + Nikita Filatov = 3 strikes and you're out!!

Nothing has gone right this year and as they say when it rains it sure does pour.

Maybe Team USA can give us some sunshine tonight with a big win over the Canadians!

Filatov is a bigger head case than we thought

"If it looked this, youre prob right" . . . . Who the hell does this kid think he is??

Sounds like he quit because he got his feelings hurt when the C was stripped from him.

Im also beginning to hear more stories from people about this kid loving the bar scene a bit too much. Im done with drafting Russians as well.

So now this 19 y/o kid has quit on 2 different coaches who are 3 times older than him and have probably forgotten more hockey than he will ever know. Ugh.

One thing I want to know is, was there really no signs of this when we drafted him or did we not do our research enough? Tough to question Howson and his drafting research because I know he goes all out for the draft and utilizes a lot of scouts and puts a lot of stock into it.

MTM: The TRUE voice of CBJ nation!

My guess is they don't have a Wonderlic test in the NHL - otherwise, you would think a bright guy like Howson would have used it.

Also, the kid (Filly) is charming and charismatic - read: he slewed the BS-o-meter on Howson, and he fell for it, hook, line and sinker. But still, Howson had to have seen through it, right?

Makes one wonder if they should have pulled the trigger on a trade - as LTL has often said, Schenn for Filly - right around the time he bolted.

Based on the way that entire team played for the whole tournament, it wasn't an incident before the last game that caused Filatov, or the rest of the team for that matter, to turn on the coach.

Had it bee just one individual, I might be inclined to blame Filatov, but for an entire team to simultaneously fail that epically, I'm inclined to believe that perhaps the coach was just a bit too much of a hardass.

The second paragraph after the excerpt from The Pipeline that you quoted stated the following:

"An NHL executive told me that Plyuschev was to hard lined with his players, who tuned him out. The Pipeline Show saw evidence of this during the 2008 World Junior A Challenge in Camrose when Plyuschev went ballistic several times behind the bench."

Don't get me wrong, I think he could have handled the situation here significantly better (both sides likely could have), and I'm not absolving him completely. Still, this incident probably isn't the one to call the nail in the coffin.

Psycloud: Thanks so much! Great research! That was really insightful.

Yeah, I'd heard he (Filly) was a very popular guy with his teammates, especially the younger guys, which I really believe - directly, more than indirectly - their play, since he departed.

Again, thanks...

Filatov and the Russians got to understand. This is the United States of America. You work to get your spot and make something of yourself. This ain't Russia.

I'm not the biggest fan right now of H&H and I believe there were areas in this situation they could have handled better. Ultimately, this whole situation is on Filatov. He needs to grow up and be a man.
