It's no secret the Chicago Blackhawks are up against the cap - in fact according to Cap-geek.com they have 57 million tied up in just 14 players. Something is going to have to give for the Cup champs.
There have been a lot of names tossed around and some speculation that Chicago may bury a guy like Huet and his 5.625 million dollar contact in the minors.
According to Chicago's Daily Herald one name Jackets fans should keep an eye on is center/winger Patrick Sharp.
Sharp is an interesting target. He actually reminds me of Antoinne Vermette as he can effectively play the wing and center.
He's just 28 years old and notched 25g 41 for 66 points last season (one shy or our captain who had just 67 points) - but that was with some high flying teammates. He had 44 and 62 points the previous seasons. He comes with a price tag of 4.1 million this year and 4.2 next before becoming a UFA.
Forecaster's take:
ASSETS: Has plenty of versatility and skill. Skates very well and has the hockey sense to play a top-six role at any forward position. Kills penalties with aplomb. FLAWS: Tends to wear down over the course of the long season, so he could be better if he got stronger physically. Is better when playing a wing position than at center. CAREER POTENTIAL: Versatile scoring forward.
One thing we need to prepare ourselves for is that Howson isn't going to find the ideal center for this team. Those guys aren't usually traded. Spezza may be as close to that as we could hope but that salary just will not work here -- not without Ottawa taking back some bad contracts of ours (ain't happening).
Sharp would certainly give this forward group some flexibility and punch. Between he, Brassard, Vermette and Pahlsson you now have some decent depth there. His 4.1 million contract is doable although Howson would have to move some salary the other direction to make it affordable.
Like every player there are some drawbacks.
1. Chicago is a division team and one would think Columbus would be a last option to move Sharp to.
2. Sharp is a late bloomer. Could he sustain he recent level of play in Columbus?
3. He's not a true 1st line center.
Again - Howson isn't going to find the perfect solution but Sharp is an interesting target definitely worth considering. The question now becomes what would it take?
A big part of the leverage Howson has is the 'hawks have to clear out some cap space. That is his biggest trading chip. On the flip side b/c they are so far up against the cap (even over it) they won't be able to take much if any salary back which means Howson would have to move some salary elsewhere.
This one is difficult to gauge the value on. If the 'hawks would take $$ back perhaps they'd be interested in Jan Hejda and his 2 million contract - if so, I'd make that move. Maybe a Marc Methot interests them? Perhaps sweeten the deal with a 4th round pick. If they absolutely will not take $$ back then I'd go as high at later 2nd round pick (55th overall).
I offer a d-man because we have an abundance of shutdown types and I'm anticipating Howson working a deal to bring in a top pairing guy with offensive skills. We can stand to loose one or two of our shutdown guys. Methot and Hejda would be attractive to other teams because they are effective at their roles and affordable contracts.
Maybe they bite or maybe they don't but certainly the Jackets have the assets to make this deal. Chicago has to be a willing dance partner.
Potential lineup with Sharp:
Nash - Sharp - Huselius
Umberger - Vermette - Voracek
Filatov - Brassard -Dorsett
Boll - Pahlsson - Clark
Murray
There is a lot of flexibility in that lineup with both Vermette and Sharp able to play the wing.
Things are certainly starting to heat up out there. I fully expect Howson to wheel and deal for a defensemen and/or center by the time the draft concludes June 26th.
Fire away - you interested in Sharp?

There have been a lot of recent articles talking about Spezza....
Here is what I know, Spezza has made it known that he wasn't happy with the treatment he was getting from some of the fans and the local media. Murray the Senators GM released that info to the public. Murray has made it clear that it's unlikely that they will move Spezza but they are listening to offers because on the 1st of July Spezza's NTC kicks in.
Should we pursue Spezza ?? fire away in the comment section..
Or should the Jackets trade Huselius for Jeff Carter ??

For those keeping an eye on the draft check out ISS final draft rankings -- Gormley climbs to #3:
1 Hall, Taylor LW 11/14/1991 L *6.00.5 185 Windsor OHL 2 Seguin, Tyler C 1/31/1992 R *6.01 172 Plymouth OHL 3 Gormley, Brandon D 2/18/1992 L *6.02 185 Moncton QMJHL 4 Tarasenko, Vladimir RW 12/13/1991 L 5.11 202 Novosibirsk KHL 5 Fowler, Cam D 12/5/1991 L *6.01.25 190 Windsor OHL 6 Niederreiter, Nino LW 9/8/1992 L *6.01.5 201 Portland WHL 7 Gudbranson, Erik D 1/7/1992 R *6.03.75 195 Kingston OHL 8 Johansen, Ryan C 7/31/1992 R *6.02 192 Portland WHL 9 Skinner, Jeffrey C 5/16/1992 L *5.10 187 Kitchener OHL 10 Forbort, Derek D 3/4/1992 L *6.04.5 198 Under 18 USHL
Tarasenko is Russian and despite the talent, he will drop due to the Russian factor. Interesting to see Gudbranson drop all the way to #7.
My $$ is still on Howson trading down in the 1st round if he can pick up some immediate help for next season while still maintaining a 1st round pick.
If we say at #4 I'd still like to see us end up with Fowler who I think has the best chance to be that elite offensive d-man out of that 2nd tier of prospects.

Check this out from the Montreal Gazzette:
According to various reports, at least four teams — Buffalo, Columbus, Anaheim and New Jersey — have shown serious interest in the veteran.
However check out what his agent has to say:
“As of the draft, we don’t have a no-trade (clause),” agent Rick Curran said. “But it’s almost effectively a no-trade, because unless Tomas wants to go there most general managers that I’m familiar with are not giving up asset value for a one-year player who may not even want to come to my team. Especially with what Brian wants in return.’’
Furthermore:
The challenge, for Burke, is playing matchmaker. He not only has to find a team that is interested in Kaberle, he also has to find a team that Kaberle is interested in. And they hope the two sides can settle on a new contract.
Making this more complicated is the fact that Curran has not provided the Leafs with a list of teams Kaberle would want to play for.
“Why would I do that?” asked Curran. “If Brian wants to trade him during that window of opportunity, that’s his right. I’m not going to dispute that. But I’m not going to do his work for him.
“Let’s keep this in mind: Tomas Kaberle does not want to leave Toronto. Never has. I could give (Burke) a list. But it would have one name on it — the Toronto Maple Leafs.”
“But the day of the draft there could be an announcement that the Toronto Maple Leafs trade Tomas Kaberle to so-and-so, and we could have little or no idea. That could happen.”
Make no mistake about it - Kaberle is the exact kind of d-man the Jackets could use. They want to play an up tempo puck possession style then you MUST have d-men like Kabere.
Forecaster's take:
ASSETS: Possesses tremendous hockey smarts and the ability to find his teammates with excellent passes. A good skater, he loves to join the attack.
FLAWS: Still makes occasional mistakes when pinching in. Could use more strength to better handle big NHL forwards. Doesn't shoot enough.
CAREER POTENTIAL: Elite offensive defenseman.
Kaberle is 32 and is making a very reasonable 4.25 mil next season. He's scored 46, 31 (injury year), 53, 58 and 67 points over the past 5 seasons.
Looks great right?
Unfortunately the down side is he'd likely be a 1 year rental. As we've seen time and time again Columbus is not a destination and I highly doubt he'd be doing backflips at the thought of being traded here - let alone negotiate an immediate extension.
Which then begs the question - why even try?
Well he could be forced to come and end up actually liking the city and team. Of course winning could also turns things into a favorable direction to get him re-signed. Afterall one thing we don't hear much of are players saying they didn't like playing here. They may not like the coach (Fedorov), are homesick (Foote) but more than not you hear good things - at least publicly (Jason Williams, Jason Chimera, Jody Shelley, etc).
Then again I may be being naive.
As stated Kaberle loves Toronto and he'll most certainly want to go to a contender should he be forced to move on from Toronto. I doubt Columbus is in his top 10 let alone his top 25. We need to remove ourselves from our Columbus bubble and really put ourselves in these players footsteps and think "would I want to play there?".
For young players like Stralman who never got a real chance - hell yeah. For a 32 year veteran like Kaberle whom A. doesn't want to leave Toronto and B. if he was forced too he'd want to go to a contender -- well pretty easy to answer that one.
Therein lies the problem. We can't obtain the players we REALLY need and we can't seem to grow them either. Hence the circle of suck we find ourselves in. This is a big reason why Howson has drafted and signed just about every d-men he can get his hands on -- it was a huge organizational weakness when he got here and it's about the only way we are truly going to be able to land a long term solution for that elite puck moving d-man we so desperately need on the backend. We need some of these guys to really develop like yesterday!!
Hypothetically speaking - how much to give for a guranteed 1 year of Kaberle? No chance at all you move the 4th pick for him - you can't sacrifice an asset like that for a 1 year rental. I'd be willing to move a later 1st for him though. Here are a couple of scenarios I'll toss out there - remember Toronto has no picks in the first 3 rounds:
1. Trade down from the 4th overall to a team with two first round picks. Flip one of those for Kaberle.
2. Trade the 34th overall plus a player/prospect for Kaberle.
3. Package the 34th and 55th picks in the 2nd round and move into the late first. Use that pick to flip for Kaberle.
There are some scenarios albeit Howson would have to get creative. Of course none of those address the additional 4.25 million ownership would have to green light to add to the budget.
As much as we need Kaberle I'd give it about 25% chance he is a Blue Jacket. I don't think Howson will be willing to pay the price it would take to land a guy who would most likely bolt by season's end.
I'd give it about a 90% chance he's moved on draft day however.
Somehow, someway Howson is going to have to get his hands on one of these guys if he hopes to play the kind of system he's speaking of. He may have to overpay and he may have to take a player on a short term contract but we need that talent on the blueline.
In terms of Kaberle he may not be able to get what he wants... but he needs to keep trying b/c we need what a player like that brings.
They say goaltending wins championships right? I found it interesting this year that two relatively unproven goalies backstopped their teams to the Stanley Cup Finals.
This year it appeared to be more about offense than defense and goaltending. Another sign that the dead-puck era is truly dead.
An interesting comment from new HC Scott Arniel is that he expects Rick Nash to make players around him better. That is probably my favorite thing to come out of Arniel since the HC announcement.
Let's stop beating around the bush folks - Rick Nash MUST be better than he's been. I don't buy about all this complete player crap or that it's Hitch's system that stymied him -- the dude only scored 67 points last season. Vermette had 65 and Huselius 63 under the same circumstances for pucks sake.
The guy is slated to make 7.5 million next season - that is over 15% of the Jackets total budget (assuming a 48 mil dollar budget). If he wants to get paid like the big boys then he needs to play like the big boys. That means being a complete player. That means bringing it each and every night. That means staying engaged on team happenings even in the offseason (all you had to say about the Arniel hiring is that you trust Howson decision - really? - Not even a phone call or an opinion? The lake house is more important right now I guess). That certainly means scoring more than 67 points.
Here's a stat for you - those 67 points tied Nash for 36th overall in league scoring. He was tied with the likes of Alexandre Burrows, Travis Zajac and Nick Antropov.
All good players but certainly not great and Columbus needs Nash to be great.
I don't want to hear this "he needs a center crap". Guys making that kind of jack need to make those around him better and not vice versa... just like Arniel said.
They say it's a big year for the young guys like Brassard and Mason --- put me in the camp that thinks it's the biggest year for #61.
He's getting paid to wear the CBJ logo but he needs to play like it's the Team Canada one. Only that kind of commitment and sacrifice will elevate his play and the team with him.

LTL-Nation,
I'm back for another post, as promised...apologies...
Here is my latest article for Inside Hockey:
http://www.insidehockey.com/columns/6802
Just a few comments, items I can't divulge for a national magazine:
- My very reliable sources told me (cleaning it up, here) that Dineen really, uh, crapped the money bed, during his 2nd interview - he threw off not only an arrogant vibe, but, showed his 'Hitch clone' (true) self.
- Continuing on that point, was the asymmetric fit between his (Dineen's) vision for the team - gritty, firery - vs. Scott Howson's vision. If you need further evidence on that vision, look at the types of players Howson's (and Don Boyd) has drafted: Voracek, Filatov, Moore, Golboeuf.
- Another point to keep in mind: His suspension, last season, for the Portland Pirates. It's one thing to show fire, but another to show a lack of control and leadership, in a crisis. This is the NHL, you're not playing in the league, anymore.
- If Dineen was such a valued commodity, don't you think he'd have received a job offer, by now? (TB, ATL)
- On the notion Boucher schooled Scott Howson - Not so sure, personally. Definitely a bit of a slap; however, if you're Boucher, and you have new ownership, willing to spend money (not our tightwads, here), a new GM whose legacy personifies "Street Cred", 3 stud, speed forwards (Vinny LeCavlier, Martin St. Louis, Steve Stamkos - hey Niki, wonder which one of you will turn out to be the better pro? Thought we forgot about that comment, huh?) , 2 stud offensive D-Men (Hedman, Ohlund) - in short, a far better fit for his system, one in need of a lesser overhaul than our plodding types - a 4-year contract offer, which offer would YOU take? I thought so...
- What I WILL question, on the subject of being schooled, is this: Was it short-sightedness to not offer a 4-year package? Was it short-sighted to not consider other teams might be 'in play'? Was it short-sighted to not ease the 'no movement clause' (if Boucher had designs of opting for the Habs, a year or two, later) , if that were, indeed, a subject of discussion? We'll never really know, not having all the details of both team's offers.
- From the early returns - Arniel's maiden presser, his apparent synergy with Scott Howson's vision and temperment, his reputation as a coach and character as a person (folks I know who've played for him, against him, and with him, BTW, I've yet to hear nothing short of flattering praise) - when it's all 'said and done', maybe this will have been the right choice, after all. Scott Howson, being a 2nd choice for GM, turned out pretty well, didn't it?
Again, when it's post-season, and during the months before the pucks drops - 100 days until training camp starts, BTW - hope springs eternal. So, my view is, let's give Scott Arniel a chance to succeed - either way, it's going to take a Long-Term overhaul to implement a direction that's in sync with the "New NHL" (gawd, I hate that cliche`!).
Go (the) 2 Scott's!
Go Jackets!

Scott Howson on NHL Live 06/09/10
On the Off-season, Howson commented:
"We would really to like to add some depth at center ice, we only have 3 natural center's right now. With Brassard, Pahlsson and Vermette, Vermette can play the wing as well. We would like to add some depth there, not necissarly a high-end Player. Obviously we would interested in a high-end player if he would ever become available in free agency or through a trade. We would just like to solidify that position".
Whoaaaa, Scotty hold your horses. Didn't we just hire a puck possesion offensive coach?? How the heck are we going to play an up-temp transition game with Commie, Hedja and Klesla on the back-end ?? Secondly, he's interested in a high-end player at center if he would become available in free agency (Marleau) or through a trade (Spezza)... That is the first time I have ever heard Howson say that. Vermette is a solid 2nd line center making close to 4M a year, when Howson uses the words high-end he's referring to a #1 center.. Which are rare and make $6M+ a year. Think Richards, Marleau, Jumbo Joe and Spezza. Is it possible that the CBJ won't necessarly update the back-end for the oppurtunity to snag a legitimate #1 Center ?? IMHO we are pretty solid with Vermette at 2, Pahlson at 3 and the 4th line centermen are a dime a dozen. Brassard is a good depth option so the only Centerman we would be in the market for is a true #1. Is this the year we are finally getting our wish ?? I would argue it's probably more important to update the D and maybe snag a capable top-6 forward then to pursue a centerman.. |

Hello LTLers!
Just a few items - my version of LTL's epic This and That:
I didn't know if you caught this piece from Puck-Rakers, but, here's the latest from Duufy Mac (any chance he can crawl back under that rock from which he came?) along with some of my views on his unintelligible rants:
http://blog.dispatch.com/cbj/2010/06/maclean_blasts_priest.shtml
- Primary Point: DM's an idiot! Nothing new, there...
- Ripping Mike Priest. His massive ego wouldn't factor into it, would it? I'm considering changing my nickname from Duufy Mac to Bitterman..
- Negative comments towards Arniel and/or Howson. For him, that really wasn't half bad, was it?
- Not moving the 4th pick. Unless he's including their moving down (i.e. getting the Thrash's 8th and 24th(?) picks) in the draft (i.e. Connolly), I tend to agree. No way they make a trade (the garbage rumors of trading for Kaberle, Spezza or - gasp! - Iginla) - ownership's too cheap (see thwarted Erhoff deal, when SJ wanted a draft choice, instead of Chimmer), and Howson covets draft picks, like valued commodities (past performance is no indication of future results, and investors can...oops! That's the Financial Planning caveat...apologies).
- Whether Arniel was ever a candidate. This, coming from the guy who was in bed with the devil, AKA Balsille? How'd that turn out, Bettmann's good friend? It must suck being you...
Look, the man took a jab at Mr. Mac, two weeks after he'd passed...nuff said.
In other news...
Didn't know if you saw the epic picture of a certain Flyer D-Man who we in CBJ-Nation have learned to despise, but, let's face it, would LOVE to have on our team:
Props to my good friend in Iowa, a true, non-bandwagon-jumping Hawks fan, for sharing this, with me.
Did any of you see JR's breakdown on TV, after the Hawks won the cup, and his mentioning of the 12-year old kid, who he felt he failed to deliver the Cup, to? Wow, this shows how big a deal this (winning the ultimate prize) is. Sadly, unless new ownership - you know, non-tightwad, non-podunk, non-backwoods (see The Hoep, Game Ops 'guru' Kim K, and the money squeezers at the top) who make those 'executive' decisions (more proof that a grad or undergrad degree, not being a drinking buddy of a certain former exec - see above - should be a requirement - comes in, this is something, to quote Chris Jerico (shows my level of class, huh?) would say, that we'll "NEVER...EHHHVER (EVER)" get to see...
Best text I've gotten in a long time, was received by our legendary 7th Man, AKA MTM (Matt The Mask):
"Cab Drivers around the country are now saddened, as they were pulling for the Flyers to win the Cup"
For those of you who don't know, I'll de-cypher thru that, for you: Patrick Kane, last August, was "allegedly" accused of assaulting a cab driver near his home town of Buffalo. Kane, and his cousin, pleaded guilty to noncriminal disorderly conduct charges.
So, if you ever question MTM's passion for and knowledge of the sport, not to mention an epic sense of humor, I rest-a my case-a...
I'll be posting a recent article of mine, shortly. While, as you know, I respect LTL's knowledge of the greatest game on ice, more than anyone, my being an optimist (as far as you know) believes this will work out, for the best, in the long run.
Go (The) Scott's!
Go Jackets!

I think Chicago hoists the cup tonight in Philly although I'm rooting for Philly to extend the series to game 7. Why? There is NOTHING like a game 7 in the Stanley Cup Finals where its for all the marbles. Plus, as I was just typing to an emailers (Mike), it will give me a great excuse to have some coldies this weekend (not that I need much of one).
Only one former Blue Jacket that I know of in the Stanley Cup finals. Who is it? Answer at the bottom of this post.
Only 15 days til the draft and I've been flipping back and forth on whether or not Howson should deal the pick. No longer. If Howson can find the right dance partner I think he's got to move the pick. The ideal situation would be to trade down (hopefully within the top 15) while picking up help for next year.
According to the Dispatch Tyler Wright will be heading to Russia for 5 days in June to spend some time with Nikita Filatov -- certainly the goal has to be to get a feel for where this kid's head is at in terms of his commitment to the NHL and Columbus next season. My next question is will this be before or after the draft? If this trip wraps up before the draft it could be the deciding factor if he is included in serious trade discussions.
I know a lot of folks don't think Howson would deal him b/c his value is low but I can see it going either way. Sure they could keep him and hope he pans out and/or rebuild his trade value. However the flip side of that is despite what some say the kid still has value and the org may decide after meeting with him that it's time to cut the cord and cash in for what they can and move on.
Publicly Arniel said the right things yesterday about wanting to work with him but what else is he gonna say?
I certainly wouldn't give him away but I think it would be interesting to see what teams offer up. I give it 50/50 chance he's in a Jackets jersey by the start of camp.
Lots of Spezza chatter going on out there. This is a serious case of where there is smoke there has got to be some fire.
Spezza makes a lot of sense as he's a #1 center but is sooooo damn expensive. He's signed for the next 5 years at 8, 8, 8, 5 and 4 mil per season. He's still only 26 and had 57 points in 60 games last season but he's been known to take games off.
I've seen a lot of crazy proposals thrown out there on HF that include both Brassard and 4th overall pick plus a dump for Spezza.
I don't see any way in H-E-double hockey sticks Howson would move those assets for him.
At an absolute minimum either Mike Commodore or Kristian Huselius would have to go the other way to even get past first base. From there I could see Howson offering up one of 4th overall, Brassard or Filatov. After that I could see a B type prospect or 3rd round pick or later to top it off.
I can NOT see him moving more than one blue chip asset - not when taking back that kind of salary. Remember cap/budget space is like gold in this league. Even if he sent back Commodore or Huselius in the other direction he's still be taking on 3+ mil and I don't see our frugal ownership biting on that one.
I'll file this in the "unlikely" category as I just don't see the salary hits lining up unless ownership opens the wallet (again "unlikely").
Speaking of Brassard I was a little disappointed to learn he is not yet in town for summer work outs. On the flip side I was very excited to hear that Steve Mason was here.
The names of those in town thrown out by Howson yesterday were Derek Dorsett, Jarred Boll, Steve Mason and John Moore.
Dorsett and Boll don't surprise me. Those two are always working their asses off.
Mase I already touched on but how about that John Moore? Good early sign of commitment from him.
Great to see these guys here but after last year, that list should be a whole lot longer. For all I know they may be here but if so I'd like to think Howson would have commented on them.
Let's hope it grows over the next few weeks.
Hits for Hockey grew by another $125 big ones yesterday after the Sportsbook sponsor underneath the R Bar logo re-upped for another year. Give em a click if your interested.
Nothing like a little coaching drama to get the casual fan re-engaged in CBJ news... this particular blog was jumpin the past couple of days as is I'm sure others were and I can't tell you how many folks stopped by at work to chat and ask me about Ariel and this Boucher-gate.
Jackets may have looked like clowns again but it did get people talkin about them in June.
As they say, there is no bad publicity.
I like all this talk about playing an up-tempo puck possession style. Sounds great... in theory. One major problem however is that you have to have the skill to pull that off - especially on the backend.
After all the new coach butt kissing is over let's get down to the read business -- what is Howson and ownership prepared to do to get Arniel the players to play this system?
As they say, how can anyone expect Arniel to cook the meal with out the right groceries?
...errr somethin like that.

In case you missed it on BlueJackets.NHL.TV here is the video playback of the presser introducing the Jackets 7th coach, Scott Arniel:
Like the "up tempo puck possession" comments from the Scotts although you need the players, especially on the backend, to play that style. Arniel seems genuinely excited to be here and meet the challenge.
My first overall impression is certainly a good one. Of course that new car smell can wear off very quickly and ultimately his success will be measured like every other head coach - in wins and losses.
Off topic but I love the back drop of the arena and cannon during the presser. Of course as we know the cannon will be the focal point on the new 3rd jersey.
Fire away - your first impressions on the Jackets new HC?
